Giddy Jazz Band

C'est en 1990 que le Giddy Jazz Band (GJB) naquit, par une belle soirée d'automne, sur les bords du lac de Neuchâtel en Suisse. Composé de 7 musiciens, la formation est dans l'esprit du Jazz Traditionnel / Swing. Le répertoire du groupe est issu des grands standards du jazz New-Orléans avec des arrangements marqués par la patte du GJB: des entrées aux consonances slaves ou un rythme de samba endiablé, suivi de chorus lumineux, le tout parsemé d'interventions délicates germées dans l'esprit du Giddy Jazz Band. Le premier CD « Live In La Passade » est un point d'orgue, mais aussi un regard instantané sur la vie du groupe. Enregistré, en prise direct en 2002 sans aucun filet, ce CD est une expérience, une façon de fixer un nouveau point de départ pour avancer encore dans ce vaste monde qu'est celui du Jazz.. Le GJB, suite à la participation au workshop d'Ascona en 2007, va amorcer un virage qui va donner un nouveau souffle, une nouvelle impulsion avec des arrangements plus orientés swing, mais toujours avec la signature du GJB. S'en suivent aussi quelques performances avec une chanteuse, Marielle Simmons (NL) et quelques musiciens rencontrés à Ascona. 2009 fût également marquée par l'arrivée de Giliane, jeune chanteuse, qui par la fraîcheur et l'authenticité de ses interprétations donne au GJB une nouvelle couleur.

Pâques 2016 marque une nouvelle aventure pour le band: la participation au festival in et off de Swing à Mirepoix dans l'Ariège en France. Le succès fût au rendez-vous, à tel point que, probablement, nous pourrions vous y retrouver en 2020 pour les 25 ans du festival. 

 

The Giddy Jazz Band (GJB) is born in Switzerland during a fall Evening of 1990, along the Neuchâtel lake shore. Consisting of 7 musicians, the band plays in the traditional/Swing Jazz spirit. The repertoire comes from the big New-Orleans jazz standards with arrangements marked by the band's paw: Entries with Slavish consonances or furious Samba rhythms, followed by bright choruses, overall sprinkled with sensitive interventions germinated in the Giddy Jazz Band's mind. The first CD "Live in La Passade" is one culmination but also an instant vision of the band's life. Recorded live in 2002 with no net, this CD was an experience and a new starting point to go ahead in the vast Jazz World. In 2007, the GJB took part at the Ascona Workshop. It is the turn for a new breath, a new impulse with arrangements more swing oriented, but still with the GJB signature. This experience was followed by some gigs with the singer Marielle Simons (NL) and some musicians met in Ascona. In 2009, Giliane joined the band. Her youth and freshness within her performances gives a new color to the GJB.

Easter 2016 was another adventure for the band: the band gigged in the in and off festival of Swing à Mirepoix, in the Ariège, France. It was such a blast that we might probably see you there in 2020 for the 25th anniversary of the Festival.

 

 

 

René Roethlisberg, trp, Lead

La chaleur du son de sa trompette n'a d'égal que le jeu tantôt simple d'un blues ensorcelant, tantôt complexe d'un passage bop tout en gardant toujours le sens de la mélodie et de la pureté que sont les thèmes de jazz.. René œuvre, ou a également œuvré, dans d'autres groupe de la région comme l'excellent Guilty ou encore les Amis du Jazz de Cortaillod.

 

The warm sound of his trumpet is a perfect match with his sometimes simple bewitching blues style or sometimes with a bop transition, never neglecting the sense of the melody and the purity of the jazz themes. René plays, or did play, in other ^regional bands like the excellent Guilty or Les Amis du Jazz de Cortaillod.

 

 

Jean-Michel Beiner, cl, sax

Jean-Michel, jazzman de cœur et cofondateur du groupe, tient les registres de clarinette et de sax soprano de façon irréprochable. Son style sent bon la côte Est des Etats-Unis et ce avec une excellente maîtrise. Jean-Michel joue ou a également joué dans plusieurs autres groupes comme : Guilty, Old Time Jazz Remember et les VDR Hairy Stompers.

 

 

 

Jean-Michel, Jazzman of heart and co-founder of the band, plays impeccably clarinet and soprano sax. His style smells good the East Coast (USA) and with a great control. Jean-Michel plays also, or used to play, in other bands like Guilty, Old Time Jazz Remember and the VDR Hairy Stompers.

 

Cornelius Felgenhauer, piano

Cornelius est un pianiste d'exception qui a pour qualité première, outre son jeu de pianiste incomparable, sa flexibilité d'adaptation à n'importe quel style de jazz.. Après quelques années passées au Conservatoire de Genève, dans la classe d'Henri Chaix, il entre au GJB et se distingue également comme piano-bar. Cornelius a aussi joué dans le Concert Band du Littoral Neuchâtelois, et poursuit l'aventure du Big Band du Littoral Neuchâtelois.

 

Cornelius is an exceptional pianist who's first quality, besides his unique play, is his flexibility to almost any jazz style. After some years at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, in the class of Henri Chaix, Cornelius joins the GJB and plays also occasionally as piano bar. He played also in the Concert Band du Littoral Neuchâtelois, and continues the adventure of the Big Band du Littoral Neuchâtelois.

 

Jean-Marc Polier, bass

Bassiste dont le feeling n'a que d'égal son jeu captivant, riche et inimitable, Jean-Marc est un jazzman amateur accompli. Il joue, ou a joué, dans plusieurs formations de renom telles que le New Castle Jazz Band et les Amis du Jazz de Cortaillod.

 

 

Bassist, whose feeling is only equaled by his captivating, rich and inimitable play, Jean-Marc is an acomplished amateur jazzman. He plays, or used to play, in several renowned bands like the New Castle Jazz Band, the Amis du Jazz de Cortaillod or the Saxtet Chinois.

 

 

Denis Béguin, trb, vocal

Denis, co-fondateur du groupe, s'occupe de la partie "trombonnistique et vocalistique" du GJB. Après avoir appris son instrument à la Musique Militaire de Colombier (NE), il s'adonne totalement à la cause JAZZ et fait partie, ou a fait partie, du Old Fashion Band, du Daniel Raemy Big Band, des Amis du Jazz de Cortaillod ou du Concert Band du Littoral Neuchâtelois.

 

Denis, co-founder of the band, deals with the trombone and vocal part of the GJB. After learning his instrument in the Musique Militaire de Colombier, he completely devoted himself in the JAZZ cause, and participates, or has participated, to the Old Fashion Band, the Daniel Raemy Big Band, the Amis du Jazz de Cortaillod or to the Concert Band du Littoral Neuchâtelois.

 

Denis Bellini, Drums

Batteur, dont le style s'adapte comme un gant au GJB de par son efficacité incomparable, est véritablement "habité" par le swing. Il joue aussi avec plusieurs groupes de la région Neuchâteloise.

 

 

Drummer, whose style fits like a glove to the GJB by its incomparable efficiency. Truly "lived" by the swing, he plays in numerous bands in the region of Neuchâtel.

 

 

Giliane Béguin, vocal

Giliane apporte une nouvelle corde à l'arc du Giddy Jazz Band en reprenant des grands classiques de jazz comme : All Of Me, Goody Goody ou encore Cry Me A River. Giliane a remporté quelques prix de chant dont notamment : les 1ers prix du jury et du public au concours de Chézard St-Martin en 2007 ainsi que le 1er prix du concours Voice of Future à Fribourg l'année suivante. Giliane brings another string to the Giddy Jazz Band's bow, resuming great jazz classics like: All Of Me, Goody Goody or Cry Me A River. Giliane has won several singing awards: 1st prizes of the jury and the public in 2007 at the Chézard St-Martin contest and the 1st prize of the Voice of Future contest in Fribourg the following year.
